Social mobility is important because people should be able to fulfil their potential, without being limited by the environment they were born into. Our circumstances should not limit us – instead, everyone should have a fair chance to succeed. The Social Mobility Commission (SMC) monitors social mobility across the UK. They aim to understand how many people are socially mobile, in what parts of the country, and whether a person’s background is limiting opportunity.
